Ensembles and Performance Groups: A degree requirement that doesn’t feel like a degree requirement

Every Collinsworth School of Music major is required to participate in at least one major ensemble, but we’ve never had to twist anyone’s arm. There’s just something about playing with a group of incredible musicians that doesn’t feel like work. As you can tell from the list below, you’re sure to find a group that best fits your extraordinary talents and specific musical pursuits.

University Choir and Orchestra

150+ vocalists and instrumentalists. 50 annual concerts. The group that embodies what it means to be a student in the Collinsworth School of Music: excitement and passion for performance, engagement with every audience, expressing undeniable charisma, and, most importantly, using your musical gifts to worship and lead others in worship. Join the University Choir and Orchestra and become part of a growing tradition of musical excellence—and a member of the premier performance group at CBU.

Women’s Choir

Eighty women offering their voices, hands and lives to the Lord. And you can make it 81. Join the Women’s Choir and add your voice to the three- and four-part harmonies that define this ensemble’s sound. The Women’s Choir’s year-long performance schedule culminates in a two-week concert tour in May, where you’ll showcase your improved performance skills and form lifelong friendships with your fellow ensemble members.

New Song

Female vocalists may also choose New Song. This chorale offers more than 60 CBU women the opportunity to connect with audiences throughout the year. New Song members finish the year with an extended tour. The group’s stage presence—often described as “joyful” and “engaging”—inspires audiences at every stop.

Male Chorale

This 85-strong all-male vocal group performs everything from hymns and anthems to contemporary and gospel music. Backed by a rhythm and brass section, their charismatic performances are crowd pleasers. A year end tour caps each experience.

Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra performs classical literature from the Baroque period to the present and is open by audition. As a member of the Symphony Orchestra, you’ll perform three or four times each semester in addition to collaborating with Choral Union on significant master works.

Small Groups

If you’ve ever dreamed of touring the country with a band of your closest friends and musical collaborators, chances are you’ll want to join a Small Group in the Collinsworth School of Music. The 5, 7 to 9-member vocal Small Groups perform in local churches and other venues several times each month. Each summer, two to three student-led groups also travel across the United States and abroad on an eight-week concert tour, singing and ministering in churches, schools and summer camps. Get ready for the open road.

Concert Band

As a member of the CBU Concert Band, you’ll showcase your talents at a variety of university and community events, local high schools and churches, and participate in a concert tour every spring. Best of all, you’ll experience the joy born from playing with a group of talented musicians—of working together to convey something that you couldn’t possibly achieve on your own.

Jazz Band

The CBU Jazz Band became an overnight success during their first concert in December 2003. A full-size big band performing straight-ahead jazz in a wide variety of styles—including everything from blues and ballads to funk and Brazilian sambas—the Jazz Band plays great new arrangements in addition to original charts from the Count Basie Orchestra, the Buddy Rich Big Band, and Tower of Power. If you love every kind of music, you’ll love playing in the Jazz Band.

Pep Band

Performing at thrilling Lancer home games, the Pep Band gives instrumental students a chance to provide additional excitement each time our teams score. The Pep Band has become the voice of CBU athletic spirit.
