Mary Vanhoozer, DMA
Instructor, Music in Global Cultures
Applied Faculty, Piano Performance
Dr. Mary Vanhoozer is a professional concert pianist, chamber musician, and pedagogue. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Shapiro in 2013. Her musical journey, however, began in a very different place: Edinburgh, Scotland. When Dr. Vanhoozer was four her family moved to Edinburgh. She began piano lessons with her father, an amateur pianist and professional theologian, and started violin at age seven. At age nine, she was admitted to St. Mary's School of Music, an independent specialist music school, which offers both music and academic education to musically gifted children.
After her return to the United States in 1999, Dr. Vanhoozer began competing, which led to some awards and illustrious performance opportunities: she appeared as piano soloist with the Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra, and performed a solo piano recital at the Chicago Cultural Center. (She also performed Sarasate's famous Zigeunerweisen on the violin for Rachel Barton Pine at the Chicago Cultural Center.) Dr. Vanhoozer has performed in piano masterclasses for Leon Fleisher at the Cleveland Institute of Music, John Perry at the Montecito International Music Festival, and Imogen Cooper at the Gilmore Festival. Recent performances also include two trio tours in Southern California, performances in Basel, Switzerland, and solo recitals at Wheaton College and Oakland University.
During her studies at Eastman School of Music she delved into the world of early music and Baroque performance practice under the guidance of lutenist and scholar Paul O'Dette. This rich experience deepened her love for J. S. Bach. Her debut solo piano album released this past fall - From Leipzig to LA - includes Bach's complete keyboard partitas and a newly commissioned piece, "Partita Picosa," by composer Josh Rodriguez.
Dr. Vanhoozer currently serves at the Collinsworth School of Music; she has also taught at the Coda Mountain Academy Summer Music Festival, and appears frequently as guest artist and masterclass instructor at Westmont College. Vanhoozer's music mentors are Carol Honigberg, Daniel Paul Horn, Daniel Shapiro, Peter Slowik, Paul O'Dette, Vincent Lenti and Douglas Humpherys.
